On the 21st of January, Coláiste Choilm Tullamore sent three teams of robots to compete in the highly anticipated 2nd-year VEX Robotics competition at Killina Presentation School. The event, filled with intense engineering and strategic gameplay, saw robots designed and programmed by Transition Year students working in tandem with their second-year teammates. Each team brought their own unique strengths, with the three robots led by talented TY students Ahmed Mukassabi, Maks Zeniuk, and Darrin Dinson.
The competition featured schools from across Offaly, including Ardscoil Chiaráin Naofa, Killina Presentation Secondary School, Tullamore College, Banagher College, Gallen Community School, Oaklands Community College, St. Brendan’s School, and Coláiste Naomh Cormac. It was a day full of innovation and teamwork, with only the top two teams earning a spot at the All-Ireland VEX Robotics competition in Cork, raising the stakes for everyone involved.
The day began at 10:20 AM with the first qualification match, which saw Coláiste Choilm Tullamore face off against Coláiste Naomh Cormac. As the rounds progressed, Coláiste Choilm’s teams faced numerous challenges. Darrin Dinson’s team stood out, making it to the top four before being knocked out in a thrilling match against Gallen Community School. Ahmed Mukassabi’s and Maks Zeniuk’s teams battled valiantly, overcoming technical difficulties and tough competition, showcasing adaptability and perseverance throughout.
A huge thank you to Offaly County Council for organizing this incredible event and to Killina Presentation School for hosting. Killina went above and beyond, providing food and drinks for all attendees and being the perfect host for the day, ensuring the competition ran smoothly and comfortably for everyone involved.
Special thanks also go to Coláiste Choilm’s dedicated teachers, Mr. Molloy and Mr. Guinan, for their guidance and encouragement, which were instrumental in the students’ journey.
Although Coláiste Choilm didn’t secure a spot in the All-Irelands, the competition was a valuable experience. Students left with new skills, lasting friendships, and a deeper passion for robotics engineering. The achievements of the top two teams, now headed to Cork, have inspired future competitors. The Coláiste Choilm teams are already looking forward to their next challenge!
Thank you again to @Killina and @OffalyCoCo for making this day such a success!
