Colaiste Choilm secure huge First Year Football victory

Colaiste Choilm 9-7

Oaklands Community School 2-0

By Cian O'Brien

As the referee throws the ball up in the air for the first ever Kevin Kilmurray Cup, Mr Kearney and Mr Farrell start with a very strong line-up hoping to be the first team to have their names engraved on the trophy. Colaiste Choilm started off very strong gaining the majority of possession. This lead to a goal from Keith O Rourke, a goal and a point from Billy Heffernan and a point from Eoin Byrne.

As the game flew by Colaiste Choilm weren’t going to let their opposition get a sniff of the ball, leading to many more goals and points from them. As the attack was doing their job getting many scores, the defence was holding up strong with Harry Dunne, Jake Conlon and Darragh Staunton not letting any ball get by them. Cillian Humphrey had very little to do in the first half, however, as the game was reaching half time the ball was played down the left flank leading to Oakland getting a goal before the half came to a close.

Colaiste Choilm came out looking stronger than ever in the 2nd half getting multiple back to back points and goals from the team. As time went on the game was in Colaiste Choilm's hands and Mr Kearney and Mr Farrell saw this opportunity to bring on some of the substitutes including Sam Heffernan who took this opportunity to get his name on the scoresheet.

Colaiste Choilm continued to dominate and kept the supporters excited and at ease with joint Captain Aaron Mangan also getting on the scoresheet. Now with the game firmly in the Colaiste Choilm hands, they decided to bring on more players including Oisin Rigney, Daniel Conway and Fionn McGrath. Harry Cleary replaced Cillian Humphrey who thankfully didn’t have too much to do. Oakland did end up only getting one more goal but it wasn’t enough to take down Colaiste Choilm.

As the referee blew the final whistle all the Colaiste Choilm players and staff were ecstatic and as the players shook hands with the heartbroken Oakland players they all got claps and cheers from the parents. As they got ready for the presentation, Aaron Mangan and Conall Minnock read out their speech and thanked the Oakland players for a great game. They were then presented with the trophy and there was celebrations and cheers from all the parents and players.
