Happy Retirement Mr. Masterson

Friday 28th May marked the end of an era at Coláiste Choilm when popular teacher, Mr. Rory Masterson, retired after 42 years in the classroom. Mr. Masterson has been a permanent fixture at CBS Tullamore for over four decades where he has taught many pupils History and Geography during his long career. Rory also lectured part-time at NUI Maynooth from where he obtained a PhD, and he is a renowned author of several history books.

In what was a very emotional afternoon, glowing tributes were paid to Rory after his years of service at the school. Deputy Principal, Mr. Gearóid O’Regan acknowledged the “work and commitment Rory has given to the school over the past 42 years.” He thanked him “for his friendship, his inspiration and everything he gave to the school. His work as Year Head and his involvement as a member of the Pastoral Care Team have ensured the needs of our students were met to an extremely high standard.”

Principal, Mr. Tadhg O’Sullivan said that Rory’s love of teaching and his passion for his subject areas were clearly evident. “His professional wisdom is fused with a calm and pleasant disposition both inside and outside of the classroom. Students hold Rory in very high esteem and his energy levels imparting knowledge and instilling a love of his subject material are second to none.”

English and PE teacher, Mr. John Lydon, spoke eloquently about their experiences together as a staff over the years. He said that the students and staff alike had benefitted immensely from his expertise and his interests in Geography, History and politics. He concluded by making a presentation of a picture of Fore Abbey to Rory, on behalf of the staff.

The final speech of the afternoon was left to the man himself. Mr. Masterson thanked everyone that had made his career so special, the children, staff, parents and community. Admitting he has “mixed feelings” about the retirement, Mr. Masterson said the school has been an “incredible place to work” and the staff have been like family to him.

As a school community, we wish Rory health and happiness as the next phase of his life beckons. Retirement is the closing of one chapter, but it signifies the beginning of another – one that will offer endless opportunities to explore new horizons. So Rory, we wish you what you wish for yourself – health and happiness to journey through your new horizons, quality time with family and friends and the realisation of the many goals that you will want to achieve.
