UNLUCKY COLAISTE CHOILM BEATEN ON CHAMPIONSHIP DEBUT

Reporting by Ben Colgan and AJ Murphy

Coláiste Choilm’s 1st Year footballers took on Mullingar CBS in their first experience of playing in the school’s iconic blue and red at Dr. Kelly’s Field. It was a valiant effort from the team but they fell short this time. It won’t be long before this excellent team begins to gel, so don’t judge them by one performance.

The first half began with Mullingar scoring 3 points without reply. Coláiste Choilm won a free soon after and Jamie Hoey slotted it over to put Colaiste Choilm’s name on the scoreboard for the first time for this team.

Mullingar, unfortunately, rallied to win 6 kickouts in a row and scored 6 points, not at all the fault of the keeper, Ben Twomey, who minutes later denied the Mullingar full forward a goal with an outstanding save to, perhaps, keep Coláiste Choilm in it.

Another free booted over by Jamie Hoey gave us momentum before a rocket of a goal and 2 points from Mullingar brought us back down to earth before the break.

Scores on the board at the half were Coláiste Choilm 0-02 – Mullingar CBS 1-11.

After the interval, Mullingar came out wanting this game wrapped up quickly, scoring 2-3 in a matter of minutes. It could've been more, without another fine save from Ben Twomey in goals to prevent the net bulging once again. Another fantastic point from Jamie Hoey and one from Jack Dunne also reduced the deficit, but no matter how hard they tried, Coláiste Choilm couldn't get the net to rattle, until, 10 minutes before the end, a mix up between keeper and corner back let the ball roll into the net.

However, the game wasn’t there for CC anymore as just before the goal, Mullingar scored a penalty and 2 points to extend their lead and wrap this match up. The referee blew his whistle with a final score of Coláiste Choilm 1-5 – Mullingar CBS 5-16.
